Hi Everyone, I am born today in this blogging world, here I am a toddler guided by my master Shi-FU from my past incarnation, my Web designer Mr. Rajesh who incepted me to write a blog to create a good SEO for my website so that I gain more business and bring peace and justice to the valley of peace(My family) and save the future of KUNG-FU(My Architectural Practice).

My first quest here is to decode the skills of The Dragon Warrior(The Learnings of Architecture ), yes I am starting with the famous dialog of my inner child’s character –

“My Fist hungers for Architecture “

And my first sub quest is

DECODING the Style Art DECO

Lets start with a mood board of what the style is for people who doesn’t know what art deco is-

The image can be very familiar to the visuals of “The Great Gatsby” movie where we are overwhelmed by Dicaprio’s Performance and the song by Lana del ray (young and beautiful).

Art Deco is seen as the design style that effectively conveyed the fun and elegance of the party scene, the luxury of cruise liners and skyscrapers and the fantasy of Hollywood in the movie and yes the style did justice to portray the visuals needed for the film makers.

The Film makers were right , Art Deco style is known for its elegant, luxurious, and grand feel. Speaking of its History, the style an Architectural design style that emerged in the 1920s and 1930s, defined by geometric patterns, bold colors, and luxurious materials. The style is a celebration of the machine age, exuding glamour and opulence with its clean lines, streamlined forms, and reflective surfaces. Key features include stepped forms, ziggurat motifs, sunburst patterns, and the use of rich materials like chrome, lacquer, and exotic woods.

You might wonder how Zigarut mottifs celebrated machine age ?

our first decoding starts from here – the Usage of Ziggarut mottifs had a reason where that was the time period where the Tutankhamun’s tomb in Egypt was discover. The 1920s were a pivotal decade in design, marked by a confluence of cultural and technological shifts. A public fascination with ancient Egypt, ignited by archaeological discoveries, brought a new set of symbolic motifs and symmetrical patterns into the mainstream, much in the way pop culture influences fashion trends today. This aesthetic trend coincided with a revolution in technology and manufacturing. New materials like reinforced concrete and steel, which were far more efficient for mass production than the labor-intensive stone and wood of previous eras, favored simplified, geometric forms. As a result, the ornate, organic designs of the past were replaced by the clean lines and elegant symmetry of Art Deco and early Modernism. This transition was a direct reflection of a new design philosophy: one that valued functional efficiency and machine-age aesthetics over traditional craftsmanship and decoration.

Now, we’ll take a deep dive into Art Deco interiors. The goal is to decode each element and understand its unique design principles, empowering us to incorporate them into our own creative projects.

The art deco style had a sophisticated dramatic ambience and the reason behind it is due to various reasons, Art Deco interiors is a direct reflection of the period’s cultural and economic context. It was a reaction to the past and an embrace of the future. The design displayed the wealth of the people and their reflection of Success; hence the design is luxurious and grand.

This was the style statement of the New Elite in that period.

HOW TO MAKE THE CURENT HOUSE INTERIORS AS THE ART DECO STYLE

It is very Simple !

STEP 1- Walls

Art deco style as a very ornated and highly detailed wall with mostly geometric patterns. The sense of vibrance and luxury is achieved in design by using Jewel tones as it portrays vibrance and the exotic nature like the gem stones( I think we are also attracted to these precious and semi-precious stones ).

STEP 2 -Ceiling

The Ceiling of the art deco style is  Adding intricate ceiling moldings or decorative plasterwork and elevate a room. plaster medallions with geometric or tiered patterns are used very ofen to achieve this

STEP 3 -Flooring

The floor sets the stage for the entire space hence to showcase the grandeur style of art deco ,usage of Polished marble or marble-effect tiles are a perfect choice. Classic black and white checkered patterns are a hallmark of the style. Dark hardwoods with a high-gloss finish also work well, especially when laid in herringbone or chevron patterns. an ornate rug on top of your polished floor adds more beauty and elegance to the design

STEP 4- Furniture

Art Deco furniture is all about a balance of sleek lines and plush comfort A sofa with a clean, streamlined silhouette and a curved back is a great choice. Upholster it in a luxurious fabric like velvet, chenille, or leather in a jewel tone. Side tables and chairs should have a polished look. Look for pieces with chrome, brass, or mirror accents. A side table with a glass top and a geometric metal frame is a classic Art Deco piece.

STEP 5- Lighting

Lighting is paramount in Art Deco spaces as it highlights the materials and forms, A tiered or crystal chandelier is a perfect centerpiece. Look for fixtures with geometric shapes and chrome or brass finishes. A combination of ambient light and decorative light like chandeliers and Spot lights to highlight the elegant design elements will bring the richness to the design and grandeur feel to the space .

STEP 6- Interior Props and Finishes

  • These details tie the entire look together. The Art deco style uses interior props to create a sense of focus in the design hence a sun burst or a fan shape décor with metal finish is seen in most of the interiors which have used this style . the radiating nature of this type of props create a sense of authority to the space and mainly to a person to whom it acts as a back drop . it gives a sense of power and authority . apart from this usage of decorative bowls, vases, and boxes with geometric patterns or metallic finishes. A mirrored tray on a coffee table with a few glass or chrome decorative items is a great way to add a finishing touch.
